Review: SIGG Bottles, Top-Shelf Transport

Viva la bottle revolution! I admit I’ve been a Nalgene loyalist for awhile now — sometimes you just can’t help but buy into the hype, and the bottles certainly did fare better than standard sports bottles when it came to preserving taste. But SIGG? SIGG just slam-dunked the market and earned another champion; so long Nalgene, hello sweet SIGG!

What’s the difference? I’m no scientist so the 100 years of Swiss quality and craftsmanship is a little “wizard in a bottle” to me, but their eco-friendly reusable products do away with the plastic (did you know that Americans add over 30 million petroleum-based plastic bottles to our landfills EVERYDAY? horrific!) and offer specially lined aluminum and stainless steel bottles ready to go wherever you do — hiking, biking, camping, the stadium for a tailgate, on the subway, wherever. Even the bottle tops are a stroke of genius with subtle “why didn’t someone else think of that?” add-ons like a loop for easy carrying and a twist-stop on the sports bottle that traps liquid til you purposely unlock the sipper.

Not convinced there could be a difference? Take your favorite drinking bottle, fill it with filtered water, and leave it on the window ledge for a day — then take a swig and you might be surprised to find a peculiar, slightly plastic, aftertaste. That’s where SIGG rises above; with fully opaque and brilliantly designed exteriors, your hot and cold fluids are kept perfectly protected, and easily cleaned with soap and water (or baking soda and vinegar for your more stubborn goods).

Here are a few of our favorite things — do your holiday list lovelies a favor and upgrade them this season to a wonderful new travel bottle, available in 144 designs and 22 interchangeable lids directly from mysigg.com.

SIGG RED ALERT 1.0L (33 OZ)
19.99

This bottle hasn’t left my side since it arrived, and it’s made quite the impression on everyone that’s seen it. In the words of my brother (covetously rolling it in his hands), “it’s just a damned cool bottle”. The size is perfect for travel and light enough to not weigh you down, plus it’s an absolute breeze to clean up so long as you remember to give it a good rinse after use. After knocking around for a couple of weeks, there’s still not a scratch on it — this puppy is tough!

SIGG YIN YANG 0.6L (20 OZ)
$18.99

A step smaller than the Skull-and-Crossbones model, this one makes for a good commuter bottle with a smooth flip-cap top to prevent spilling/accidental mucking-up of the drinking nozzle. It does take a bit to get used to since most of us are conditioned to squeeze a sports bottle to expel the water, but new training is a great trade off for a sturdy on the go bottle. And don’t forget, SIGG lets you pick and choose which bottle cap suits you best, so feel free to pick from the screw or sports top.

SIGG BLACK OVAL WITH CUP 0.6L(20 OZ)
$29.99

Know what’s better than your steel Craftsman flask? This one. Sure, it’s a little pricier, but it makes up for it in awesomeness — this is actually a bit of a Swiss kit with a handful of great features: the flask itself is a standalone black piece that’s smooth and a little larger than your standard flask, but it comes with a snug stainless steel holster that doubles as a cup (with handles that swing out and can double as a belt-loop for hiking around). They even thought well enough to add a leather “belt” that’s connected to the cup and loops over the mouth of the flask to prevent it from slipping out as you jostle around. This one’s a no-brainer for any of your friends that camp or are often seen sporting a flask.

SIGG ICE BLUE TREND 0.7L(24 OZ)
$34.99

This is not your grandmother’s thermal bottle. The double-walled stainless steel thermos keeps your hot beverages hot longer than just about any bottle on the market, making it perfect for soup, coffee, hot chocolate, chili, or anything you need to warm your bones this winter. The lid doubles as a bowl, and the screw top is a bit of smarts that lets you sip, strain or pour as needed while keeping contents as warm as possible. And the brushed metallic finish is nothing to shake a stick at either. The whole product line, really, is just about the most attractive and polished bottle selection around.

SIGG LOUNGE 0.75L (25 OZ)
$20.99

Just like the bike water bottle sitting on top of your fridge, but better — no more solar influence, able to take some good thwacks, and fitted with the sport top to keep your drinkables free from road grime. Plus the grip-groove helps reduce the clumsy fumble for the bottle when you zipping down the trails.
