TUAW has picked up on a quote Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer recently laid out in the open regarding Apple’s iPhone.
“There’s no chance that the iPhone is going to get any significant market share. No chance. It’s a $500 subsidized item. They may make a lot of money. But if you actually take a look at the 1.3 billion phones that get sold, I’d prefer to have our software in 60 percent or 70 percent or 80 percent of them, than I would to have 2 percent or 3 percent, which is what Apple might get.”
I believe Apple is going to stomp Ballmers claim that they will only dominate 2-3% of the market. Apple saw an opening where they could improve in the MP3 market which they proceeded to take over with the iPod, this time they’ve spotted another weak link in the market – a much larger market, cellphones.
I’m looking forward to seeing what Apple has in store for us to completely re-invent the mobile industry, just like they did with the iPod.
