We all know that the Nintendo Wii can be dangerous but, now it seems they are inadvertently killing people. On Saturday a woman was competing in a terrestrial radio station contest to see who could drink the most water without having to go to the bathroom in order to win a Nintendo Wii. The 28 year old woman wound up drinking so much water that she in fact died from water intoxication.
The contest held by KDND 107.9 was cleverly named “Hold Your Wee for a Wii” where contestants were handed eight-ounce bottles of water to drink every 15 minutes. The Howard Stern show has since reported that the KDND radio show has since been suspended because of the unfortunate death.
UPDATE: 10 Radio Station Employees Fired
It was reported today that 10 employees of the California radio station have since been fired because of the untimely death of the mother of 3 that competed in the “Hold Your Wee for a Wii” contest.
When I first learned of this incident I figured that the woman in the contest knew the risks and she had signed a waiver so, it must have been her own fault. Well I was wrong. Today I got a hold of the tape from the actual radio program and the contest in question.
What I am surprised about is that no news organization is reporting the fact that the DJ’s at the station were completely clueless and when they were told about the inherent dangers that acted like it was no big deal. On two occasions listeners called in and specifically told the on air personalities that these contestants could either become ill or even possibly die from drinking this much water and the term “water intoxication” was specifically cited. The DJ simply responded with authority, as if he were a doctor, “if they drink too much water they will just throw up.”
The fact that these guys were fired was the least that can be done. In the end these guys were warned, they knew what could go wrong, and they went ahead with the contest anyway. I just hope that in the coming days someone does something to make sure that they receive an even more harsh punishment. I am no lawyer but, this seems like total and utter gross negligence.
Wouldn’t your bladder give way?
If this is true, the human body must have some ridiculous fallacies.
If you want to get technical It is about diluting the sodium from your blood plasma. Not trying to be a smarty pants, just clarifying.
When blood gets over diluted with water, it cannot carry any more oxygen. No oxygen, No heart beat.
“if they drink too much water they will just throw up.” – That dude needs to be shot/sued/imprisoned/poisoned with water.
You just want someone to die… A little much dont you think sure tbey were ignorant and didnt know the truth or dangers but to wish tortue on them, wtf is wrong with you?
Remember the Asian guy that was playing World of Warcraft and held his bladder for far too long?
No?
Well, it burst.
And killed him.
