If you haven’t heard all of the internet rumors yet I’ll fill you in. Sony is working on the new PSP2 and they’ve added some cool features. As far as I can tell it’s all just rumors still but here are some of the supposed new features; dual analog sticks, bigger screen and touch controls.
The touch controls are whats really creating a lot of buzz around the new PSP2. Many sources have said that the controls will be on the back of the device. We don’t know what exactly the main function of the touch controls will be and some have even said that Sony is leaving that up to the game developers. The people at Kotaku have said that the touch panel will look like a big mouse pad track-pad.
The lack of 2 analog sticks on the PSP and PSPgo was a huge issue for many gamers and it appears that Sony has heard your cries and is planning on fixing the issue. If you’re not a huge gamer than you could probably care less about how many analog sticks the new PSP2 will have but for those few dedicated hardcore gamers, a second analog stick is invaluable.
The new screen is reported to be 1 inch bigger than the original PSP and much clearer. The extra inch means the new PSP will be bigger than it’s predecessor which has created more rumors that perhaps this new device will be a combination phone, e-reader and portable gaming device. Could this be Sony’s response to Apple’s iPad? If so, can Sony compete on price with Apple? Remember that when the PS3 originally came out it cost $700. Are you willing to pay big bucks for a 1st generation toy with limited games/apps and who knows what kind of bugs to work out?
I’m not saying you shouldn’t get one when they come out, I’m just hoping that Sony gets the pricing right and can convince developers to create some games that will take advantage of the new features. I don’t need to spend a couple hundred dollars for the privilege of downloading “classic” Sony games when I can find knock-offs for most of them in the app store for $.99.
This new gadget is expected to come out in the Fall of 2011. No specs have been released on the processor and memory. Come back to Gadizmo and be sure to subscribe to our feed so we can keep you informed of any new info.
The new PSP looks amazing! Sad we have to wait a whole year though
