The Dash: Wireless Earbuds That Double as a Performance Fitness Tracker

Move over Dre, there’s a new kid on the block. If you thought you’ve proven your musical acuity with a pair of Beats, then I’m afraid you’ve barely touched the tip of the iceberg. Developed by German start-up Bragi, The Dash converges wearable tech, entertainment and fitness all into a pair of discreetly designed ear buds.

The Dash dons a 4GB drive that can store up to 1,000 songs, completely eliminating the need to have a mobile device on your person. Its ergonomic design ensures maximum comfort, and is water-resistant up to one meter. To accommodate different wearers, The Dash offers three different sizes of silicone sleeves, designed to hold tightly during exercise with a three point secure fit.

When the earphones are connected with a smartphone, a companion app can be used to control playback and volume, but built-in touch sensors also enable the wearer to perform different actions with a simple swipe. Especially useful runners and cyclists, the players’ noise cancellation feature can be activated to drown out ambient sound, or disabled to flow in passive noise from the surroundings.

Hopefully the aforementioned specs teased your interest, but if not, The Dash’s fitness component will be sure to give you a run for your money. This is what differentiates The Dash from other products on the market. The same built-in micro mic that controls Dash’s noise cancellation feature also doubles as a fitness tracker, monitoring the heart rate variability, oxygen saturation, and other important fitness metrics. When linked to a smartphone’s GPS, the earbuds can also detect the distance traveled, speed, and altitude.

Since its launch on Kickstarter, The Dash has crushed its stretch goal – a measly goal of $666,667 – and has seen over $1.9 million in crowdfunds. With more than a month’s time left, it’s not a shocker to expect that this forward-trending product will be a milestone for wearable technology.

The video above is the company’s pitch video, be sure to check it out. If you are interesting in grabbing a pair for yourself, The Dash can be pre-ordered for $199, and will ship towards the end of year.
