Now your phone can match your shoes — maybe.
Puma just announced plans to become a cell phone maker. The Puma Phone isn’t made from recycled shoes and doesn’t have different funky designs. Instead, it’s a joint effort with Sagem Wireless, who will be making the devices branded with the Puma name.
“Just as Puma is unlike any other sportlifestyle company out there, the Puma Phone is unlike any mobile phone on the market,” said Jochen Zeitz, CEO of Puma.
Well, that’s definitely true. We don’t think any other phone companies have a footwear empire to fall back on, do they?
Of course, that’s not exactly what the company means with that statement. Instead, they are probably thinking about the phone’s “spin and scratch music player,” as well as some of the other fun features. That’s right; the company is planning to market the device as fun and fashionable. In fact, they suggest that users sport Puma pride, and wear the phone as an accessory.
Other phone features include a 2.8-inch 240 x 320 touchscreen, web service, messaging, GPS, a 3.2-megapixel camera, video calling, a pedometer, Bluetooth photo sharing and solar power charging capabilities. The company is also hoping users will connect with other Puma fans, as well as purchase products through portable access to the Puma website.
If Puma-branded phones take the cell world by storm, maybe we could eventually see devices that match your favorite footwear. If so, we’d like to see a match up with these ASAP. There could be a bit of a wait, though. The Puma Phone will hit Europe first, starting April 2010. Puma then plans to roll out the device to international markets shortly after.
