Oculus Rift: Step out of Reality and Into the Game

There is a new fan favorite on Kickstarter today and if it’s successful, the Rift will be the reason why you’ll never be able to pull a kid away from their video game ever again. Dinner is ready? Yeah… OK.

Makers of the virtual reality gaming headset set their sights a bit low today when they quickly surpassed their $250k goal in just a matter of hours – $600k at the time of this writing. Surprisingly enough, the people lining up to back the project aren’t even necessarily gamers. Instead, Ocular is raising money by rewarding game designers who pledge a minimum of $275, with early run prototype Rifts and development kits.

This early excitement shown by developers and the apparent reasonable price point is no doubt encouraging to fans looking to sink their teeth into an immersive version DOOM 3 BFG. That’s right, the first Oculus-ready game is DOOM 3 BFG and a copy is included for each dev kit backer.

Keep in mind, even though the technology is likely better than anything on the market, the hardware is not finalized. The idea is to get something out to the designers as quickly as possible so the said to be “even more impressive” consumer version can be created without sacrificing price or quality.

Fans itching to take the blue pill can support this creator of mega motion sickness, by donating slightly lesser amounts in return for the typical t-shirt and poster shwag.
