This Tankless Underwater Breathing Apparatus Brings Us One Step Closer to Fish-People

Scuba diving alone is a tricky sport; but if you didn’t need strap on 20 to 30 pounds of equipment, the task might be a little more bearable. South Korean designer Jeabyun Yeon is not buying into the idea of hulling around heavy equipment for his underwater excursions. Instead, he is looking to build a revolutionary device that will have professional and amateur divers camping outside the store.

Called the Triton, this simple mouthpiece would allow divers to breathe underwater without oxygen tanks. Sounds unbelievable, I know!

Simple in design, the Triton has two branching arms that are covered in plastic “gills” that extract oxygen from the water and deliver breathable oxygen directly to the lungs. Without the bulky equipment that can tangle even the most experienced of divers, the wearer only needs to bite down on the plastic mouth piece to explore the cavernous ocean like a fish.

Triton does require power – a micro-battery that’s unbelievably small and easily rechargeable, is embedded into the system. The internal filtration system will take in water, pass it through fine threads, and block out any molecules bigger than the biological size of a H20 molecule. Air filtered by the device will then be stored in a miniature tank for continuous use.

Everything about this device sounds like a gift from the heavens; but unfortunately, it is just a concept. While the design is still pending development, there is no doubt that within a few years we will be able to explore the deep blue with some tech-savy equipment.

Yeon has high hopes about making this device a reality, and with some luck, we just might see the commercialization of Triton before you know it. Until then, all you scuba enthusiasts reading this post should probably hang on to your gear for a bit longer!

  1. When the polar icecaps finally melt and the sea level rises hundreds of feet, I will take my trimaran and Triton around the world and forage for dirt at the bottom of the ocean and trade it for goods. People will call me The Mariner — I will be a legend.

It is amazing how many ignorant people are captured by the idea that is promoted with help of beautiful pictures. The scientific principle of this device is known for very long time. It is also known that it’s not a feasible solution in a package like this. Anyway, there will always be people willing to invest their money in the idea like this.
