Print Your Photographs Directly On Wood

With a natural disaster like Hurricane Sandy, it’s easy to be reminded how short life really is. It’s easy to realize that the only thing we have in life is the people in our lives and our experiences. All else is ephemeral. What better to capture our memories and the people we love than with photographs? Thanks to Southern, California based company Woodsnap, you can now print your memories beautifully, directly on a wood canvas.

Using high quality wood and sustainable methods, Woodsnap is shy to disclose their process (for good reason), but says, “a team of little magical elves that use their mystical mind powers to print directly on your wood canvas.” You can imagine it’s a mix of chemical and digital processes to create the exposure on a sheet of wood – as it is totally possible to print on surfaces other than photo paper, like t-shirts, mugs, and even metal. However, there is something about wood and the grain that shows behind the photographs that give it a much more personable and nostalgic quality.

Woodsnap has a series of sizes you can choose from – from 8X8 to much large poster size prints and its as easy as uploading you image on their website, choosing the size and having it delivered to your door. Woodsnap also offers free photo processing and the print is ready to hang.

As for the whole destroying the forest thing, Woodsnap says it’s doing its best by working with American Forests to help plant more trees. Whenever you order a print they plant a giant redwood. They also use what they call “inventoried wood and sustainable inks.” In the end, Woodsnap would make a great gift or an addition to the house decor – providing an excellent alternative to the bland family portrait above the fireplace. I just wouldn’t recommend trying to get your kid’s photos printed and then shoving it in your wallet – you might get splinters.
