OUYA Android Gaming Console Racks up $1Million in a Matter of Hours

OUYA is looking to upend gaming and apparently all Kickstarter funding records, with a new $99 Android console for the TV.

By raising over a million dollars in just half a day, the new video game project out of Los Angeles California just smashed what the wildly popular, record setting, Pebble smart watch did a few short months ago.

The tiny hacker friendly gaming box boasts a Tegra3 quad-core processor, 1GB RAM, 8GB flash storage, HDMI support up to 1080p, WiFi, Bluetooth, USB 2.0, Andriod 4.0, and a sexy xbox-like wireless controller.

The open Andriod design promises to break down the expensive licensing, retail, and publishing barriers and therefore increase developer incentive to make more creative and innovative games – with one catch, at least some of the gameplay has to be free.

This free to play model ensures that there will, at the very least, be a free demo of each and every game with the ability to purchase additional items, upgrades, or features if the game appeals to you. No more paying high prices only to get home, unwrap that impenetrable cellophane, pop in the game, and then finding out it stinks.

OUYA knows you can’t have a great console without an amazing user experience so, they are working with award winning Jambox designer, Yves Behar.

Gamers can get their foot in the door for just $95, while hundreds of developers have already pledged $699 for early SDK access, an extra controller, and the promise of one years promotion.

The idea of making games less expensive to build, and less expensive to buy, is apparently something the gaming community is feverishly behind. In the short time it took to pen this article, OUYA has added over $400k in additional funding – gamers have spoken.
