Just What Fat Americans Need: Pizza from a Vending Machine

When this abomination first came across my desk a few months ago I did what any concerned citizen should have done – I did some research, realized it was only available in the U.K, and promptly ignored it, thinking there is no way this thing would fly in the U.S.

I have to say, as an Italian born in the North End of Boston, the idea of pizza from a vending machine offends me and my entire family.

Renting a movie, cashing in some change, or even grabbing a new iPod before a long flight are all perfectly acceptable uses of vending machines but, PIZZA? My faith in mankinds survival as a species is slipping.

All of that said, I am still a sucker for gadgets and any machine that can actually assemble and cook a pizza is a feat of engineering worth recognizing.

The vending machine dubbed, Let’s Pizza, isn’t simply a big red box full of ready made pies, heated up in a microwave to order. Instead, each machine contains all the ingredients required to build a pizza from scratch, even the dough is kneaded to order.

Let’s Pizza holds enough ingredients to build 200 pizzas and while it is possible to create any kind of pie with the machine (meat, fish, vegetarian, and even kosher), each unit is limited to just four preset combinations.

The 10.5 inch product cooks in just under 3 minutes with the help of a fast acting infra-red oven and has a suggested cost of $5.95.

The Netherlands based creator of the end of humanity, A1 Concepts, say they are currently working on new headquarters in Atlanta and once completed, we could see these devices in malls, airports, hospitals, restaurants, hotels, supermarkets, universities, gas stations, and bus stations across the U.S. by the end of this year.

CEO Ronald Rammers says “Let’s Pizza is a huge success in Europe and especially in Italy. That was proof for us that we have a very good pizza.”

Mr. Rammers, I have officially declared, shenanigans.
