EasyCap USB Review

If you want to capture your favorite TV program right to your computer without any kind of fancy video card, usbfever has the answer. The EasyCap USB2.0 audio/video adapter captures high-quality video and audio directly through your USB port all while allowing you to record in your favorite DVD formats.

I was lucky enough to get my hands on one of these truly useful little gadgets and it did not disappoint. The EasyCap came with its own drivers and Ulead video capturing software that had me recording tonight’s Red Sox game in about 5 minutes. All I had to do was install the driver/software, plug in the EasyCap to my digital cable box, tweak a few recording options and to my delight I was recording in no time flat.

Nothing is better when something just works the way it is supposed to and the EasyCap is no exception. For those of you who don’t have a fancy video card with all kinds of inputs or like me have your computer in a place where you just can’t hook it up to your digital cable line the EasyCap, at only $39, is a great alternative to grabbing high quality audio and video for your desk or laptop.

  1. Hey does anyone know if it can record in 720p from my xbox? Cos 420p looks SO BAD on my TV… I usuallly play on 1080i but I am still waiting for my EasyCap to come and I realised that i wont be able to play in full HD. :( so does it work in 720p or even 1080i?

  4. Please help !!! I have boought the EasyCap USB 2.0 Video adapter with audio. I have attempted to capture from a video tape through my TV to my laptop. The capture of the video is great, I cannot fault it, BUT the audio is really distorted, especially in the lower voice ranges. I have every other possible setting I can find in the capture “options” menu but either I get video and no sound or video with distorted sound.
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks :)

    • In your Windows Control Panel > Speakers, check the Audio Source Device options. Also check the Advanced Volume settings, make sure they’re all MAX volume and NO Mute boxes are checked.

      • If Jim’s fix don’t work try setting your mixer settings in the control panel to 70%. If you use windows mediaplayer for playback, do not max it’s volume setting. In most cases a Media player volume at 100% will cause an exceptional amount of distortion. Also try the VLC Player from download.com. I’ve had 100% luck with that player.

  6. Using EasyCAP as a capture device with Windows XP – was working wonderfully – then suddenly – color gone and I’m in Film Noir. So – thought connecting cable going bad – bought another – still black and white output. Updated driver from Sabrent – still black and white. Any suggestions?

    • @Emily: possibly the input settings have changed to different video standard ie: PAL /NTSC they have to be the same as your input equipment, check settings on software. hth

    • I have the same issue with black and white. I tested it with my wee composite and it shows the colors but when I try it with my VHS recorder I can only get black and while. I tried every possible setting and i get the same. any suggestion?

      • I had same problem, worked by changing USB port in my laptop. Presumably, USB port if used for mulitiple purposes like mouse, usb stick, no longer work effectively in easycap. but changing to other port not used frequently will make this work

So can you use this to connect something to your laptop and just watch/play, without recording? Like, could I plug my PS2 into it, and use my computer as a monitor?

Yes you can use it as monitor, if you can actually get the bloody thing to work.

      • you can do but only by making small screen in ulead full screen, and then resolution and clearity of picture will be poor.

Right now when i click on capture video the only device it shows to capture from is my webcam can someone give some idea of how to resolve this problem

    • you can try following.
      1. uninstall everthing specially including driver and then reinstall.
      2. Check whether this driver is conflicting with other video capture device driver in your laptop/computer like for webcam., then you may need to remove either one to make other work.
      3. if you are working with windows 7, install this driver from net. included cd driver is old mine was for xp and vista.

    • Andrea – if you can find a basic settings menu, see if there’s a “stabilize VHS” option somewhere. if so, you should probably use for ONLY VHS.

I got the easy cap capture and installed in my computer my problem is how do I burn the video into a dvd once I transfered it. Do I need to save it and then burn it or what?

    Reply
    • download.com has a program called (ANY VIDEO to DVD CONVERTER). Type in Any Video Converter in their search. Once installed, the output folder will be the video converted to DVD format. Just send it to your DVD burner and it burns it.

      Reply
      • if in your setting you have selected DVD and recording as mpg2 and resolution as 720×526, then capture itself will be in dvd format and can be directly burnt on dvd and will work with any dvd player.

  17. Can this be used to see videos that are on my PC on my TV (PC to TV)?

    Reply
    • To watch PC videos on TV , You must have 2 things. #1 If your television is a newer flat panel it should have a PC or RGB input. This will display your PC….Make sure to have monitor refresh rate at 60 HZ. 2nd. if your tv has a video/audio input, get an RGB to video interface for the video, and a 3.5 MM plug (Stereo) to RCA jacks. That RCA cable is for tv audio in. MAKE SURE IN BOTH CASES TO SET MONITOR REFRESH RATE AT 60HZ.

  20. does the driver of this gadget runs into Adobe Photoshop’s “import” button under “file” menu? ..so i can use my digicam as a remote shooting device? please tell me if the driver it runs

    Reply
    • you can record your digicam display video on laptop with easycap by connecting video output of digicam to device, but you will be handicapped by restraint of the cables. hence best is to use digicam to record video.

  21. Dummy me but I bought this product not realizing it takes 2.0 USB so I spent hours just trying to down load the driver from the CD and getting alternate drivers from the internet which was an even bigger waste of time. I’m ordering a new 4 port USB 2.0 card in hopes that is truly the problem. Will advise if it works. D’oh.
