Send money to a friend through the Tweet-a-Beer app to buy themselves a nice brew.

For those times when you want to buy your friend a beer, but they are halfway around the world, there is now, an app for that — Tweet-a-Beer.

Tweet-a-Beer, created by Portland’s one tenfour and Waggener Edstrom, was introduced at the SXSW Interactive portion of the convention. It utilizes twitter’s Chirpify, twitter’s payment app, and sends payments via paypal. You can enter a personalized message to the beer-receiver of your choice, maybe describing how awesome they are and why the deserve this beer money, or you can enter in a time and place to meet to grab a few cold ones. Either way, once you hit that submit button, your friend will get a tweet telling them that they just received the $5.

Sure, maybe $5 isn’t enough in some parts of the world (like New York), but it’ll certainly help those who are in need of a dire drink. The $5 also doesn’t need to go to beer, but it’s certainly a lot more fun that way.

Tenfour isn’t really looking to make money off this idea, though they are skimming 10 cents for each transaction. Kent Hollenbeck states that the release of Tweet-a-Beer during the SXSW was no coincidence, “Given how large the conference is, the best way to track where the hottest spots are and where to meet up face-to-face is via Twitter and location-based services… it’s the perfect venue to help foster real-life connections.”

The app only took six weeks to create and already has about 500 users.

While the idea is great, there are still a lot of things that could be added to future updates of the apps, like being able to request a beer from readers (in the case of bloggers). There’s also the fact that for those that are friends IRL can just send $5 to their friend if they know their paypal address and not be charged a ten cent fee. Not to mention the chance people may not even notice that they were mentioned on a tweet or sent something through twitter, leaving the money on a beerless limbo!

Overall, the idea is a lot of fun, but it doesn’t seem to have a lot of staying power aside from a one time gimmicky use.

But what about those of us who want something a little more sophisticated?

Well, you could opt for either the TikTok or the LunaTik watch conversion kit — the kit recently broke the record on KickStarter for funds raised, garnering pledges from willing buyers totaling over $941,000. But then there’s still the issue of the plasticky look.

Nay, for those who want something more manly (especially if you’re strapping a neon pink iPod), the good folks over at ThinkGeek have just the watch strap for you. We’re talking real hand-tooled leather and anodized stainless steel here — what could be more manly than that?

How about a frickin’ bottle opener. Yes, you heard me right. When the folks producing the band realized they could laser cut something into the stainless steel plate used to attach the iPod Nano, they had the A+, Number 1 best idea in the world. Obviously their iPod watches were telling them, “It’s five o’clock somewhere.”

Now, when you aren’t sitting on your couch at home popping open bottles with your Clicker Universal Remote, you can impress your friends while sparing your body parts. Because we all know that opening bottles with your teeth may be cool, but come on. Besides, at $49.99, the watch band is far less than the bill from the orthodontist you’re likely to incur after the New Year’s party.

If you want to give one as a gift this Christmas, there’s still time to order and receive the band before the big day. Check out ThinkGeek’s Holiday Shipping Guide to find out just what method to choose. (If you’re looking to receive one, you’d better update that wish list really soon.) But there’s still plenty of time to receive your order before New Year’s Eve, which is when you may want this the most.

And even if your iPod really is neon pink, this band just may make the guys look past the fact. If it doesn’t work right away, don’t worry. After you bust open enough bottles for them, it definitely will.

Family pictures are sentimental, sweet and sort of a necessity. I’d call them anything but fun. That could change, however, thanks to the Bev-Cam, a $13 flask that looks just like a digital camera.

Sadly, the Bev-Cam doesn’t take any actual pictures. Now that would really be something. Instead, this handy pocket-sized product is for the true alcoholic, who needs to hold a few nips into a device designed to deceive others. I’d assume that after downing the 5 ounces of alcohol that this unit holds, you might be running around, acting like you’re taking pictures.

Parent company Binocktails says that the Bev-Cam comes with the flask, a carrying case, and a funnel for easy filling — hopefully just not in your car.

This product might make for a fun gift for the just-over-21 crowd, as well as bachelor and bachelorette parties. A gift for yourself? Well, that might just be more on the sad side. Either way, I’d have to guess that if you own one of these, the family will never have to tell you to smile and say, “Cheese.” As a matter of fact, someone might have to slap you to get you to stop doing those things.

Just in case a camera doesn’t manage to hide your alcoholism all that well, Binocktails also makes the Bev-Burry, which holds 3 ounces of your favorite beverage inside a faux Blackberry. That one runs $11 and includes a clip-on holster.

Both products, along with the original 16-ounce binocular double flask ($17), are available exclusively on the Binocktails website.

Here’s the scenario: You’re watching season finale of your favorite TV show or the biggest game of the season, a commercial interrupts and you’re thirsty. You run to the kitchen to grab a malt-based bottle of liquid refreshment and you hear that your program has come back on, so you rush back to the couch. Only then do you realize that your bottle is still capped. You fish in your pocket for your keys and find that you’ve nothing on your keychain. You look around in vain for an opener, and you can’t pop the cap on the new coffee table because the significant other hammered into your head the inappropriateness of such an action when you handed over your credit card. Time is running out, your beer is getting warm, and no commercial is in sight. What are you to do?

If you’re the smart couch potato, you stop sweating and simply pick up your Clicker Universal Remote.

The Clicker is a sleek and attractive universal remote with a bottle opener integrated into its side. Control for up to eight electronic components is available: There are component select buttons for TV, DVD, SAT, CABLE, VCR, CD, DVR, and AMP with 630 presets for most major brands and a preset search function for easy setup.

And then, of course, there is control of a ninth component: Your bottle cap. The one integrated opener is preset to handle thousands of major and minor brands, and there’s no need to utilize a function search here — the only search necessary is for the remote itself.

Evidently the company is currently out of stock and on back order, but you can leave your contact information to be notified when the stock is replenished. Cost should be around $25.

Your beer gut will thank you heartily.

There’s a virtually limitless world of iPhone apps out there today, ranging from the extremely useful to the outlandishly inane.

The world’s greatest beverage hasn’t escaped the iPhone’s pull, either. While some of the gadget’s beery apps are worthless for anything but a laugh and even downright demeaning—come on, I don’t want to pretend I’m drinking a beer!—others are decidedly more useful. One such example is GreatBrewers.com’s BeerCloud.

Great Brewers describes BeerCloud for the iPhone thusly:

“BeerCloud is a revolutionary mobile app that helps you pair beer with food, track down your favorite beers in your neighborhood, discover the world of beer styles, and pull up a full description of nearly any beer in seconds. Whether you’re a beer consumer who could use some guidance in making a well-educated purchase, a food lover looking to discover new ways to enhance a meal with a complementary beer pairing, or a traveling beer enthusiast who wants to instantly map the closest stores, bars, and restaurants carrying your favorite beers, BeerCloud is an essential iPhone app.”

That means that, instead of having to pretend to drink a beer, you can find out just where to get the best ones, and even what type of food you should pair them with. BeerCloud is able to utilize the iPhone’s GPS receiver to point out exactly where to you should head when looking for that elusive one-off Bourbon Barrel-Aged Imperial Stout or the nearest brewpub to your hotel.

Great Brewers’ database is being constantly updated, but it’s currently quite a ways off from those of BeerAdvocate or RateBeer. BeerAdvocate’s BeerFly tool is a great way to find the best breweries, brewpubs, beer bars and shops in an area, but it doesn’t integrate with your GPS to tell you where they are, so BeerCloud has a one-up in that aspect. And its other features only bolster its usefulness. The website touts the following for its app (which, in addition to iPhone availability, can also be nabbed for Google’s Android):

Search the perpetually growing database of 2,900+ beers from GreatBrewers.com

Descriptions include product image, style, taste profile, food pairing recommendation, strength (ABV), color (SRM), and bitterness (IBU)

View more than 400 brewery pages for a description and a list of beers they produce

For beer lovers sporting iPhones in their pockets, BeerCloud is perhaps the greatest addition to portable beer connoisseurship since Oskar Blues put Ten Fidy in a can.

And undoubtedly BeerCloud would be quite apt at telling you where you can grab a can or six.

‘Tis the season to keep your best single malt on lockdown! Ever notice after a night of having friends over that your best liquor bottles suddenly have only a couple of jiggers left, even after reminding your sloshed guests that the party favors were restricted to the bottles left out in the open? Because there’s always that joker that’s going to take the time to dig deep into the dark corners of your bar cabinet no matter how well you think you’ve hidden your best booze, the Liquor Lock is ready to puzzle — and stop — your misbehaving friends. The concept is pretty simple: replacing the standard cork or screw top, the lock fits atop your bottle with a 3 digit combination lock. To set in place, just enter the combination and turn the top clockwise, effectively expanding the rubber stopper inside and locking the top on tight. With the right code, opening is a reverse of this two-step and releases the pressure of the rubber with a counter-clockwise turn. At $14.95 each from Sporty’s Men’s Collection (or $13.50 each for 3 or more) it may not be the best solution to secure all of the bottles in your liquor cabinet, but it’s a great start for the special bottles in your collection.

Now the girls can turn an A cup into a double D all while sneaking a bottle of wine, a mixed drink or even a fifth of their favorite hard stuff to the movies, concerts, or sports event.

The creators at Underdevelopment say “We get it that some chicks just don’t want that pregnant look that comes with The Beerbelly.” Man, those guys have their fingers on the pulse of women! For $29.95 what could possibly make a better gift this holiday season?

The folks over at HomeWetBar.com have picked up the Gravity Magnetic Shot Glasses made of colorful plastic and stainless steel bases that serve to magnetically affix the glass to its stainless steel serving tray (7.5″ square) — turn it any which way, even half-stumble over your ottoman, and this puppies will stay put til the drink is forcibly snatched away. For $24.95, it’s a decent deal if you’re through with trying to serve up your Rumple Minze by the fistful. But don’t let the picture fool you, your booze will not stay in place if the tray’s upside down — gravity is always in play.

It’s been a couple of years since my beer pong playing college days but I have not yet forgotten. If you have never had the pleasure, it is an experience and one that can become maddening if people are too dumb or drunk to play by the rules.

What are the two biggest problems with beer pong? Bad racks and spillage! There is nothing worse than someone who lacks the ability to tightly re-rack and pattern a set of cups. Except maybe a couple of sissies who fail to put enough alcohol in their cups to keep them glued to the table, causing cups to topple and precious booze to be wasted.

Check out the beer pong rack from The Founding Collegians and you’ll never again have to worry about opponents so drunk from a night full of beatings that they can’t figure out how to construct a basic geometric shape or girls wasting your entire roll of paper towels just to clean up their fallen soldiers.
